Dr Olivia Ahn
CEO, Fluus
Tell us about you in 100 words
I am Liv, co-founder of Fluus, which has developed and launched the world's first fully flushable period pad. 100% biodegradable, 100% microplastic-free and zero waste, our flushable pad is designed to be used like your usual pads and flushed away to degrade away just like your toilet paper.
I started my career as a doctor, and the seeds of Fluus were sown in my penultimate year at medical school where I met my co-founder Aaron, when both of us were driven to reduce permanent waste in our lives. I went full-time into Fluus in 2019 and hope to remove permanent waste from your bathroom and our planet.
Tell us about the kindest person in your career and how they made a difference in your journey
I have met many inspiring, generous and kind people along my career who have extended their support to not just myself, but others too. I would like to shine a spotlight on Mona ElNagger (partner at Valo Ventures) who has been leading by example with effective, empathetic and insightful guidance to myself and my co-founder.
If you could invite two people to dinner (dead or alive!) who would they be and why?
I would LOVE a dinner conversation with Yuval Noah Harari, who needs no introduction as one of the greatest thinkers of our generation. I would enjoy picking his brain over our rapidly changing society and our evolving relationship with technology and consumerism.
On a rather different direction, I would also love a dinner with Al Gore who started pushing sustainability into the mainstream political agenda in the early 2000's. I would love to explore the precious balance of protecting the planet we live on, with the economical considersations that a former US Vice President would have had to calculate.
What is your advice for women who are interested in or have just started in your field?
Look both ways on your journey. Look forward to those you admire who are ahead of where you are. Look back to those who look towards you for inspiration and guidance and offer advice and support for their journeys.
A tip you’d give yourself in the most challenging moment of your career
Remember my privilege. I find that journeys in entrepreneurship have peaks and troughs. For both extremes of highs and lows, I find that remembering my privilege in how I achieved the successes, as well as during my lows to remember and be grateful for the learnings and failures which have built me to be the woman I am today.
A book everyone should read and a movie everyone should watch
It will come as no surprise that I recommend Harari's book 'Sapiens'. I found it expansive, as I often find myself getting caught up in the rhythms of daily living. Sapiens is a book that will guide you as you step-back to examine humankind's history and bring a sense of perspective and hopefully learnings through this lens into our existence on this planet.
A recent favourite of mine that I will recommend is 'Parasite'. Beautiful cinematography with an immersive soundtrack that effectively shows both extremes in our present day society, makes a compelling and fantastic film that deservedly won many accolades. Hope you enjoy!
